| Aaron Visser Micah 2:6-11 Have you ever wanted to take a black marker to some parts of the Bible? Or do you feel fear and anger rise up when a preacher speaks a little too pointedly and close to home? God’s Word has a way of confronting each and every one of us, and our temptation is to silence any voice that rebukes us. Often we would prefer the preacher who just tells us what we want to hear. But the God of justice will not overlook those who get trampled by our sin, and His Word calls us to repentance. May we then receive His Word, even when it exposes the sin we want to keep. | Aaron Visser Micah 1:8-16 What reaction does sin create in you? Is it mere indifference? Is it haughtiness when you see another fall? Or is it brokenness? Even as Christians who stand forgiven, we must not forget the sight of what sin cost as we look at Jesus’ cross. That should move us, grieve us, and make a permanent impression on our perspective. We need not despair, because there is mercy. But we should also take sin seriously enough to grieve the judgment it deserves. | Aaron Visser Micah 1:2-7 We often like to admire God’s judgment from afar. We can imagine why that person should receive it, but we like to think that such words of holy anger can’t be directed at us. Micah shows us that we shouldn’t be so presumptuous, as he prophesies not only against the idolatrous northern kingdom of Israel, but also the southern kingdom of Judah. Their temple and king would not absolve them, and likewise, our own refuges cannot absolve us. Not money, not prestige, not religious activity. Only one refuge can save: Jesus Christ. | Aaron Visser Micah 1:1 Do you ever wish that you could hear from the Lord more clearly? Would you still want that if He spoke about your sin, confronted your idols, and called you to greater faithfulness? We tend to like God’s Word as long as it doesn’t challenge us, but that is precisely what we need! When God sent His prophet Micah, it was with a heavy word. But that itself is grace, because God warns before He punishes. So, even if it’s uncomfortable, let us pay heed to His Word and especially how God has ultimately spoken: through His Son, Jesus Christ. | Aaron Visser Psalm 130 Throughout this life, various trials can make us feel as if we are in the depths. But no depth is greater than the one we feel when we recognize our sin in light of God’s holiness. If God were to keep a record of our sins, we would have no hope. But with God, in Christ, there is forgiveness. That is why we can serve God, and that is why even when the night feels long, we can still look to God with confidence, because we know the morning of our full redemption is coming.
